Breathtaking Views:

Come Live In Anchorage, AK

When you hear the name Anchorage, do you picture snow? Do you think of the

northern lights? Do you think of open skies, land, and quiet? You’re not too far

off the mark, but there is a lot more to Anchorage. According to weatherspark

the snow falls around 6.5 months of the year but there are clear, dry, and perfect

seasons, too! In addition to the four seasons, you CAN see the northern lights, or

the aurora borealis, but only during September to April, with the clear nights.

According to an 1880 census, there were once just 430 non-natives living

in Anchorage. The Gold Rush of 1898 changed a lot of places in the west,

including Anchorage. It was recorded there were 40,000 non-natives living in

Anchorage. It was around 1915 when Congress authorized a railroad to be built

and people flocked to take advantage of the labor. However, it wasn’t until 1935

when a program called the New Deal was extended by Congress to choose families

from three northern states due to it being cold and it was thought they could survive

winters in Anchorage.

During World War II, things changed drastically for Anchorage. It soon became the

largest city in Alaska. About 300,000 military men and personnel moved in and

formed two bases or forts: Elmendorf and Fort Richardson. Today, you can see

military jets and trainers in the area.

The name Anchorage came because  the land created an anchorage for the

ships to drop anchor and unload. It was during 1910 that the town’s name was

actually Knik Anchorage and it was during 1915 that the United State Postal

Service dropped the first part of the name.

Anchorage is a great place to live. During the 2022 census, Anchorage’s

population was recorded as 280,437, but it has gone down since 2010

(it was recorded as being 291,826). Every city fluctuates during the years

for various reasons. But don’t let that stop you from moving to Anchorage. I

n fact, real estate may be in its prime right now for that very reason.

Anchorage can be broken down as: 62.60% White, 9.63% Asian, 9.48% two

or more races, 7.92% Native Americans, 5.57% Black or African American,

2.45% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 2.35% other. In addition, the

median age and sex ratio is 33.6, with 49.01% females (34.6 years old) and

males 50.99% (32.7 years old). Also, when it comes to housing, more females

rent (54.9%) with males owning (52.9%), but married people own their own

houses (75.5%). There is plenty of housing to go around, Anchorage is a great

place to live.

And, if you’re looking for arts or entertainment, look no further than Anchorage.

Here, you will find: art galleries, concert venues, creative performances and

displays, bands playing in parks, interactive outdoor exhibits, and drive-in

comedy shows.

Also, there are even more things to do in Anchorage: day cruises from one

of three ports (Whittier, Seward, or Portage). See glaciers, marine wildlife,

and coastal scenery. You can drive to see the Matanuska Glacier. You can also

climb the ice, go rafting in the river, or even fly through the air on Alaska’s fastest

zip-line (calling all adrenaline junkies).  One last one (but there is lots more to

see and do) is taking a scenic flight, where you can spend anywhere between

2-6 hours to watch bears. That’s right, you can actually watch them because

they are so focused on fattening up for winter that they pay no mind to humans.

But, like with all animals, always be careful.

Are you curious about what kind of education your child can get in Anchorage?

Look no further. Here is a list of Anchorage’s top three elementary, middle,

and high schools.

  1. Eagle Academy Charter School is located in Eagle River, AK and it’s

#1 in the Anchorage School District. It serves a grade level between

Kindergarten and 6th with 176 students and a 20:1 student teacher ratio.

  2. Bayshore Elementary is located in Anchorage, AK, and it’s #2 in the

Anchorage School District. It serves a grade level between

    Pre-kindergarten through 6th, with 443 students and a 17:1 student

    teacher ratio.

  3. Aurora Elementary is located in Jber, AK, and it’s #3 in the Anchorage

School District. It serves a grade level between Pre-kindergarten through

6th, with 317 students and a 16:1 student teacher ratio.

There are two out of three middle schools, where children start at the PK

or K level and continue to the eighth grade.

  1. Northern Lights ABC K-8 school is located in Anchorage, and

it is #1 in the Anchorage School District. It serves a grade level

between Pre-kindergarten and 8th grade, with 620 students and

It serves a grade level between Kindergarten and eighth grade, with

503 students, with a 17:1 student teacher ratio.

The smaller classes are a huge plus when looking for schools. That indicates

more of a teacher being able to focus on any child that has learning

challenges.

High schools in Anchorage are different from the elementary and middle

schools. We really like that they give you the graduation rate.

  1. South Anchorage High School, located in Anchorage, is #1 in

Anchorage School District with a 95% graduation rate and

    1,334 students.

  2. Polaris K-12 School actually has all of the grades. It’s #2 in the

Anchorage School District with a 100% graduation rate and

    136 students.

  3. Eagle River High School is #3 in the Anchorage School District,

with a 93% graduation rate and  834 students.

Anchorage is an epic, extraordinary and daring place to live. It has a lot

of things to do for everyone on your list. When you run out of things to

see and do in Anchorage, there are a lot more cities nearby. Anchorage

has jaw-dropping scenery, too, as well as the northern lights. You won’t be

disappointed when moving to Anchorage.
